I'm sorry to hear your knees are "deteriorating". Sounds to me like you are suffering from chondromalacia patella. Here is a link to give you some more information on that common condition:

As for exercise, you should definitely work with a physician to make sure you know what you are dealing with. In many cases, surgery may be necessary to get you to a point where you can begin moving again, pain free. Some things I think you can do safely are stationary cycling with low resistance, swimming, and exercises that strengthen your quadriceps like straight leg raises.

Thank you, Denise. Your advice matches that of the doctor I saw last year. He did not label my condition so my own research attempts were futile.
I'll continue with non weight bearing exercise until I see my own knee doctor at the end of the month. Indeed, the condition you linked me to seems correct from my viewpoint. I'll confirm that and hopefully work with a PT to develop an exercise plan.
