Q & A > Lose weight while breastfeeding...is it possible?
Hi Carli,
Thanks for your question. I feel your pain girl. I remember feeling the same way with all three of my babies. The short answer is this: this period of your life, that feels overwhelming, will be over quickly. Some women lose weight like crazy while they are nursing, and others, like you and me, don't. My body seemed to hang on to some extra body fat in order to produce milk.
But, that said, there are a few things you can do. If you have a double stroller, try and get out and walk as often as you can while the weather is still nice. The kids will love it and it will help you burn some calories. Just keep trying to get as much movement and activity in as you can. Home workout DVDs are great for Mom's who can squeeze in a little here and a little there. And 24 Hour Fitness has "Mommy and Me Classes" where you can actually take your baby!
I think your experiments with cutting calories gave your body a chance to tell you that it needed something different. So eat the way that makes you feel the best, and keeps your baby happiest.
Bottom line, (no pun intended) be patient. In no time, you will be finished nursing and working out like an animal. You will have your body back and your kids will be trying to keep up with you!!!

Denise,
Is it possible to lose weight while breastfeeding? I am nursing a 5 month old baby and exercising 3 times a week. I am not losing very much (like a pound a month) and having a hard time staying motivated as all that hard work doesn’t seem worth it. When I try to cut calories, my baby nurses way more frequently and is up all night wanting to eat, which makes me tired, grumpy and even less likely to want to exercise. It seems like a battle that I can’t seem to win. What can I do? Help please!
-Ready to lose those baby pounds, Carli
