Q & A > Stretching

I am wondering why we stretch and when do we stretch? I am interested in this in relation to all kinds of exercise, but particularly cycling.

The main reason we stretch is to improve our flexibility. A more flexible body is less prone to injury and enjoys greater range of motion in everyday activities. We're not only concerned with stretching our muscles, we want to increase the mobility of our joints as well.

The best time to stretch is when our bodies are warm. I personally like to do my deepest stretching after a good sweaty workout, or in a yoga class. If you are cycling, spend 5 or 10 minutes after your ride or cycle class to stretch. For a cyclist, focus on hip flexors and quadriceps, chest and abdomen since you have been bent over during the ride. Give some attention to the outer hips, lower back and hamstrings as well.
